Can You Drive With P0420, and Will Your Camry Pass Emissions?
A P0420 code rarely makes a Camry undrivable, but it will almost always stop it passing an OBD emissions inspection. Here is how to judge the risk, what the test actually checks and how to get a pass.
Is it safe to drive with P0420?
| What you notice | What it suggests | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Steady light, car runs normally | Converter efficiency below the limit; no active misfire | Drive gently and book a diagnosis |
| Flashing light | Active misfire that can overheat the converter | Stop when safe; have it checked |
| Loss of power, rattling or a rotten-egg smell | Possible converter damage or blockage | Stop and inspect before driving far |
| Sudden loud exhaust | Leak or missing converter | Inspect; exhaust fumes can enter the cabin |
A steady P0420 rarely strands a car on its own. The danger is what caused it. A misfire sends unburned fuel into the converter, where it burns and overheats the substrate. Oil burning on a 2.4L 2AZ-FE coats it. And while the light stays on for P0420, a second fault will not turn on a new warning, so you may miss it. Plan the repair rather than ignoring the light.
Will a Camry with P0420 pass an emissions test?
Most U.S. inspection programs test 1996-and-newer cars by plugging into the OBD-II port. The test reads whether the computer is commanding the check engine light on and whether its self-tests, called readiness monitors, have run. Arizona’s program states it plainly: a 1996-or-newer vehicle cannot pass with the check engine light on. Arizona also fails a car with too many incomplete monitors: more than two on 1996–2000 models, or more than one on 2001-and-newer models. Other states use similar limits but set their own rules, so check your state program.
| Car on test day | Likely result |
|---|---|
| Light on with P0420 | Fail |
| Code cleared the morning of the test | Not ready / reject: monitors reset |
| Repaired, driven until catalyst monitor complete, no codes | Pass if nothing else is wrong |
Why clearing the code does not work
Clearing codes with a scan tool, or disconnecting the battery, erases the monitor results along with the code. The catalyst monitor needs specific driving to run again, and if the converter is still weak it will set P0420 again once it does. Repair the cause, then drive normally for several days, including steady cruising after a full warm-up, until the scan tool shows the catalyst monitor complete.
Using the emissions warranty after a failed test
If you live in an area with a federally approved inspection program and the car fails, the federal performance warranty can apply. The EPA lists the conditions: the car failed an approved test, your state requires the repair, the failure was not caused by misuse or skipped maintenance, and you bring the car and proof of the failed test to an authorized dealer within the warranty period. For the converter, that period is 8 years or 80,000 miles. California-certified cars may have additional coverage; check your booklet on Toyota’s owner site.
A test-day checklist
- Fix the cause of P0420 using the Camry P0420 diagnosis flow.
- If the converter is replaced, use a part that is legal in your state; see OEM vs aftermarket converters and CARB rules.
- Drive until the scan tool shows the catalyst monitor complete and no pending codes.
- Keep repair receipts. Some programs offer repair waivers or extensions; your state program can explain them.
- If the code returns, re-check the sensors with our A/F and O2 sensor tests before buying more parts.
Hybrid Camrys and the catalyst monitor
A Camry Hybrid shuts its gasoline engine off often, at stops and at low speed. The catalyst monitor can only run while the engine is running and the converter is hot, so after a repair or a cleared code a hybrid may need more driving, especially steady highway driving, before the monitor reports complete. Check readiness with a scan tool before you go to the test station rather than assuming a few days is enough.
Selling or trading in a Camry with P0420
A lit check engine light lowers what buyers and dealers will offer, because they have to price in the worst case, which is a genuine Toyota converter. If you plan to sell, a written diagnosis helps: a shop report showing that the cause is, say, a leaking flex joint lets a buyer price the real repair. Do not clear the code just before a sale. Incomplete readiness monitors are easy to spot with a scan tool and make buyers suspicious.
If your state has no emissions testing
No inspection does not make the code harmless. A weak converter lets more pollution out, and the cause of the failure, especially a misfire or oil burning, keeps doing damage. It is also harder to sell a car with a lit warning light. Budget the repair with the ranges in our P0420 repair cost guide.
